Brewing Conversion Tables : Weights, Measures, Temperatures

When reviewing beer recipes I find myself endlessly converting pounds and ounces to kilos, and Fahrenheit to Celsius.

In order to speed up this process, I created these brewing conversion tables with all the necessary information in one place.

Here they are:

Large Weights (Malt etc.) : kilograms (kg) to pounds (lb)

This table will be useful when converting malt in recipes.

kilogram (kg)pound (lb)
0.1150.25
0.2250.5
0.3400.75
0.4501
0.9002
1.3503
1.8004
2.2505
2.7006
3.1507
3.6008
4.1009
4.55010
5.00011
5.45012
5.90013
6.35014
6.80015
7.25016
7.70017
8.15018
8.60019
9.05020

If you want to perform another conversion use these formulae:

kg to lb

kg x 2.20 = lb

example: 5 kg x 2.20 = 11 lb

lb to kg

lb x 0.454

example: 5 lb x 0.454 = 2.27 kg

Small Weights (Hops etc.) : grams (g) to ounces (oz)

Useful for hops and spices, which are usually measured in small amounts.

grams (g)ounces (oz)
60.2
110.4
170.6
230.8
281
431.5
572
712.5
853
993.5
1134
1284.5
1425

These are the underlying formulae should you need them:

g to oz

g x 0.035 = oz

example: 5 g x 0.035 = 0.18 oz

oz to g

oz x 28.35 = g

example: 5 oz x 28.35 = 142 g

Large Liquid Measures (Wort etc.) : litres (ml) to US gallons (gallon)

For measuring boil quantities and at various stages through the mash.

litres (l)gallons
0.50.15
10.25
20.55
30.80
41.05
51.30
61.60
71.85
82.10
92.40
102.65
112.90
123.15
133.45
143.70
153.95
164.25
174.50
184.75
195.00
205.30
215.55
225.80
236.10
246.35
256.60

If the quantity you’re looking for isn’t shown, use these equations to do your own calculation:

l to gallon

l x 0.26 = gallon

example: 5 l x 0.26 = 1.32 gallon

gallon to litre

gallon x 3.79 = litre

example: 5 gallon x 3.79 = 18.92 l

Medium Liquid Measures (Water etc.) : millilitres (ml) to US cups (cup)

Useful amongst other things for when preparing yeast.

millilitres (ml)cups
600.25
1200.5
1750.75
2351
4752
7103
9454
11805

To calculate any other value you can use these equations:

ml to cup

ml x 0.004 = cup

example: 500ml x 0.004 = 2.11 cups

cup to ml

cup x 236.6 = ml

example: 5 cups x 236.6 = 1183 ml

Small Liquid Measures (Water etc.) : millilitres (ml) to US fluid ounces (oz)

To have everything covered.

2659
29510
32511
35512
38513
41514
44515
47516

If you need to find any other measure use these formulae:

ml to oz

ml x 0.03 = oz

example: 500 ml x 0.03 = 16.9 oz

oz to ml

oz x 29.6 = ml

example: 5 x 29.6 = 148ml

Temperatures (Mash etc.) : Celsius (°C) to Fahrenheit (°F)

For mashing, strike water, fermentation and more, it’s important to monitor the temperature in brewing.

These are the equations you need if you’re working with temperatures not shown in the table:

°C to °F

(1.8 x °C) 32 = °F

example: 1.8 x 5°C = 9  –>  9 + 32 = 41°F

°F to °C

(°F – 32)/1.8 = °C

example 50°F – 32 = 18  –>  18/1.8 = 10°C
